Bishop James Dixon to run in special election to finish the late Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee's term

Jackson Lee's daughter, Erica Shelwyn Lee Carter, said she may run and if she does, Dixon said he'd drop out and support her.

HOUSTON — NAACP Houston President James Dixon said he intends to run in the special election to replace the late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.  The winner of that election would only serve out the remainder of Jackson Lee’s term, which runs through January.

“I cannot articulate how humble I am that for the past several weeks, a flood and waves of support and encouragement have poured in urging us to run to become the next congressman for the 18th Congressional District,” Dixon said on Friday.

Jackson Lee’s daughter, Erica Shelwyn Lee Carter, has indicated she might also run in the special election.

Dixon said if she does run he’ll drop out and support her. The special election is Nov. 5, the same day as the general election.

The special election is separate from the general election in November, even though they’re on the same day. The Nov. 5 ballot will also be the Democratic nominee, as selected by precinct chairs, against the Republican nominee, Lana Centoze.
