SAN ANTONIO — If you are looking for ways to commemorate Juneteenth in San Antonio, we have compiled a list of Black-owned local restaurants to visit.

The United States celebrated its first federally-recognized Juneteenth in 2021 after President Joe Biden signed a bill creating Juneteenth National Independence Day.

The holiday commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned they had been freed — two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued during the bloody Civil War. For generations, Black Americans have recognized Juneteenth, but it only became a federal holiday only in recent years.

Take a look at our list of Black-owned restaurants in San Antonio. This list is a work in progress, so if you know any other restaurants we have missed, please email news@kens5.com.
