A house north of San Antonio has been declared a total loss after burning down on Tuesday afternoon.
According to authorities, five departments responded to the blaze at a home on Twin Peaks Street, just east of Highway 281 and just north of Bulverde Street. The departments were from Bulverde, Spring Branch, Shavano Park, Bracken, and Hollywood Park.
Fire officials said there are no fire hydrants in the area, so firefighters had to use water brought in by tanker trucks.
"We had five tankers shoveling water, but we're still five or six miles away from the closest hydrant," said Bexar-Bulverde Volunteer Fire Department Chief, Jerry Bialick. "Once we fill up the tank, we've got to go get more water."
Nearly two hours after the fire broke out, the smoke cleared exposing the damage left behind.
Leaving neighbors wondering what happened.
“I was scared. I mean, it was fierce and the wind was whipping up. The flames were just literally billowing," said neighbor Jan Popovich.
Popovich lives across the street and called 911 when his dog alerted him to the fire around 4:30 p.m. this afternoon.
"“I looked over and there was so much smoke coming out of the chimney, which is very unusual because there's nobody living at the house. It's sort of been abandoned," said Popovich.
No injuries were reported, and there is no cost estimate yet on what appeared to be a massive home.
Fire officials are investigating, but have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
