HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — Former NFL cornerback Cameron Sutton turned himself in at the Orient Road Jail in Hillsborough County Sunday night, ending a weekslong search.
Sutton, 29, who previously played for the Detroit Lions, was wanted for domestic battery by strangulation.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) asked the public for help finding Sutton back on March 20.
Sutton's attorney told HCSO on March 25 that Sutton planned to turn himself in.
“After weeks of evading law enforcement, this man has finally made the right choice to turn himself in,” Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said.
The domestic battery charge stems from an early morning incident at a home in Lutz on March 7, where the sheriff's office responded to a call about domestic violence in progress involving Sutton and a woman.
The Detroit Lions released Sutton following the allegations on March 21.
Detroit signed Sutton to a $33 million, three-year contract a year ago. He helped the franchise win a division title for the first time in three decades along with two playoff games in one postseason for the first time since 1957.
He started in all 17 regular season games, making a career-high 65 tackles and one interception, and in each of Detroit’s three playoff games.
He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2017.
Domestic battery by strangulation is a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
Sutton made his first appearance before a Hillsborough County judge at 1:30 p.m. Monday. Officials from the 13th Judicial Court told 10 Tampa Bay he was released on recognizance with a no violent contact order.
