Man caught on video taking off after sideswiping local food truck

The food truck owners gave the driver an opportunity to do the right thing, but instead of waiting he took off, leaving thousands of dollars in damages.

SAN ANTONIO — A food truck was sideswiped on the city's southeast side and the driver took off before police could arrive. Before the driver got away, he was caught on cell phone video by the food truck's owners.

The family who owns the food truck is hoping you can help find the man who was behind the wheel.

The family says they gave the driver an opportunity to do the right thing. Instead, he took off leaving thousands of dollars in damages.

“The hit was hard and fast while I was chopping onions and it pushed me back,” said Gerardo Reyes, owner of El Taco Sazon.

It was on Saturday night when Reyes and his son were inside their food truck on the 3600 block of Southeast Military Drive, getting ready to open. Reyes said he thought he had his first customer, but instead was sideswiped by a truck.

“When he hit the food truck, it shook,” said Reyes.

The impact sent food flying. Reyes says he came out and confronted the driver. He asked his son to call police. Reyes says when they started calling, the driver started taking off.

Reyes says he asked his son for his cell phone and started recording the man taking off. In the video you can hear Reyes asking the driver twice in Spanish not to leave.

The man took off with tires screeching.

Reyes says the damage to his food truck is more bad luck. Just one year ago, he along with seven other family members were hit head on near Southcross Ranch Road and New Sulphur Springs, police say by a teenage drunk driver.

Reyes says his wife is still recovering, still unable to work so the food truck was helping them with income. Reyes made some repairs himself, so he can keep working.  He is now asking for the public's help.

“To help find him, to see if he can help pay for the damages,” said Reyes.

If you can identify the suspect in the video, you can contact San Antonio Police or El Taco Sazon at 210-204-1403. You can also contact El Taco Sazon on Facebook by clicking here.
