CDC: Poop detected in 58 percent of public pools

SAN ANTONIO -- The sun is peaking, and as the temperature rises, taking a dip in the pool seems enticing.

But a disturbing study from The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention may stop some swimmers from jumping in with a splash: There's likely poo in the pool.

That's kinda gross, said Jonathan Balderas.

It's nasty, said Elisa Montreal.

A recent study found E. coli in 58 percent of samples taken from filters at public pools. That means human feces taint more than half of public pools.

Researchers said swimmers contaminate pool water when they don't use proper hygiene.

When you have kids and people in a common place, you're gonna have fecal matter and urine, Balderas said.

You see diapers floating around, Montreal said. To be honest, that's why I stopped going.

The city of San Antonio already has four pools open. And with more opening up by June 15, how are they making sure the pool stays clean?

We make sure the water is treated with proper chemicals, said Lyn Kinton, the recreation manager for the San Antonio Parks & Recreation Department. We ask people to take a shower -- we have shower facilities on site -- and that they take restroom breaks.

For now, Balderas and his nephew said they'll hold off on pool time and enjoy the day by chasing the ducks.
