Inaugural Stars and Stripes Street Parade rolls through downtown San Antonio

Military City, USA was on full display for America's Independence Day.

SAN ANTONIO — People flocked to downtown San Antonio on Thursday morning to take in the colors, sights and sounds of the inaugural Stars and Stripes Street Parade.

According to Centro San Antonio, Stars and Stripes on Houston Street is the first major Fourth of July celebration in downtown in over a century.

"At the end of the day, what I truly believe is that people want an urban experience. They want to be in the middle of downtown," said Trish DeBerry, chair of Centro San Antonio. "When people were honking after Spurs championships, where were they? They were honking around downtown. July Fourth is just one more reason why people can come downtown and celebrate, and we're happy to be able to reactivate the celebration."

The parade brought the red, white and blue to downtown San Antonio, complete with classic cars, one of them carrying Mayor Ron Nirenberg. Others carried striking balloons and drove historic fire trucks, and even members of the San Antonio Warriors football team strolled along the route.

"It was early enough before nap time," said Sean Coolidge, who brought his daughter and son to the parade. "You know, they're a little too young to be staying up for fireworks and whatnot, so trying to get out for the parade before naps."

"I just like the parade when they come because sometimes we can say hi," said 6-year-old Axel Hernandez.

Centro San Antonio hopes that, just like the city's official celebration at Woodlawn Lake Park, the parade becomes a tradition for San Antonians.

"Hopefully we have set the bar for an annual tradition and this parade will only get bigger and better in future years," DeBerry said.
