SAN ANTONIO — Churchill High School band students are left with a costly fix after their instruments were soaked during a weekend performance in Waco.
The rain causing damage to the costly tune of thousands of dollars. But there's now a melody of neighborly unity as the community is rallying behind these students who say the show must go on.
Junior Colin Triggs recalled what happened when the downpour arrived before and during their performance.
"Rain or shine, Churchill band will always perform," he said. "We play our hearts out at the beginning and it starts coming down right at the halfway point of the show."
Amanda Stevenson, band director for Churchill High School, said the equipment was damaged from all the water.
"We have, in total, about $28,000 worth of damage to our instruments and equipment," she said.
She said they spent hours on Sunday inspecting the equipment. As of Monday, they were still using dryers to get the water out.
This happens to be an important week for the band: They students have a game Thursday, which is also Senior Night, before participating in a Friday competition.
Stevenson put a callout on social media for instruments the students can potentially borrow.
"We had to take care of all of our woodwinds," she said. "About 40 woodwind instruments that we needed."
She said the community has come through, donating enough instruments for the band to continue playing. And it wasn't just San Antonians chipping in.
"People have wanted to ship their instruments as far from Plano," Stevenson said. "It is a blessing. That's how great the music community is in the State of Texas."
Repairs are not cheap. There's a fundraiser underway to help pay for the costs. If you would like to help, click here.
"We will be fine," Triggs said. "I am really thankful for the people that donated."
