City Council approves applying for grant to fund improvements to Woodlawn Park

The grant money, if approved, would help increase the amount of shade within the park, address the lake's shoreline and add seating around the lake.

SAN ANTONIO — On Thursday, San Antonio City Council approved applying for a grant to fund improvements to Woodlawn Lake Park.

According to the San Antonio's Parks and Recreation Department, the park is considered to be in a historically underfunded area of the city. In order to even get a $3.25 million grant, the city has to prove it can match the funds that would be awarded.

For the past two decades, the city has heard public input in order to develop Woodlawn Lake Park. The most consistent feedback is the need to improve the park's ecology through its manmade and natural recreation elements.

The grant money, if approved, would help increase the amount of shade within the park, address the lake's shoreline and add new seating around the lake as well as a new splash pad. It would also fund the planting of 500 trees to provide natural shade throughout the park.

The application is being submitted to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, which will then be forwarded to the National Park Service.

The city will know if it's selected through the state this spring, but will not know if it gets the money until 2025.
