City councilman proposing changes to first wave of dockless scooters

An e-scooter crackdown could be coming soon to clean up the clutter and help people report problems.

SAN ANTONIO — The electric scooters scattered throughout the city could soon have a new set up. A city council member proposing to have specific parking locations throughout downtown.

The first electric scooters popped up downtown this summer. By October, the City launched its six-month pilot program designed to create safety regulations as more and more companies bring scooters into San Antonio.

As the pilot program continues, City Councilman Roberto Trevino has proposed a couple of changes that he hopes could be implemented as early as next week.

"It's a big issue. A hot topic... people have called my office regularly about this issue," Trevino said. "We want to create a framework so we can co-exist."

His proposal includes creating designated parking areas for the dockless scooters and adding a section to the city's 311 app for people to easily report scooter issues.

John Williams lives in Bexar County but enjoys riding the scooters around downtown with his son when they visit the city. He said he's onboard to see some of the changes and how it could help de-clutter the corners where scooters are parked.

"It would be cool; it would just mean people would have to go to specific locations for access," Williams said.

Trevino said he will continue to work with city leaders and other departments to see what changes can be implemented to help ease the City's growing pains.

The pilot program is expected to end April 2019.
