Insulin could be less expensive for San Antonio residents after new program approved. Here's how it works.

The new program will be implemented in H-E-B pharmacies in zip codes with the highest rates of diabetes-related hospitalizations in San Antonio.

SAN ANTONIO — City Council unanimously approved a new program Thursday to help make insulin more affordable for San Antonio residents thanks to an agreement between H-E-B and Metro Health.

According to UT Health San Antonio, one in six residents had type 2 diabetes in 2022. It’s the most common type and over time patients may need insulin to manage their blood sugar but it can be very expensive.

The new program will be implemented in H-E-B pharmacies in zip codes with the highest rates of diabetes-related hospitalizations in San Antonio.

This allows the out-of-pocket cost of insulin to be subsidized for those who can’t afford the subscription. This will be covered for up to $100 per prescription.

“Our office has received calls from residents making the difficult choice between rent and utilities, groceries, and medications like insulin. This program will provide emergency life-saving support for those most in need and we are happy to have been a champion for this issue,” District 2 Councilman Jalen McKee Rodriguez said in a statement.

A program start date was not provided.
