SA council members calling for citywide traffic analysis as city grows

KENS 5 spoke with District 2 Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez to get his take on this study.

SAN ANTONIO — A trek through San Antonio traffic can be frustrating. There's congestion, construction, and distracted drivers. Some San Antonio council members are calling for a city-wide traffic analysis.

District 2 Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez has filed a council consideration request (CCR) for the study.

"Driving in San Antonio is an extremely frustrating experience," he said. "One of the greatest number of calls that we get are request for traffic solutions and speed bumps."

There is support of other members for city staff to conduct the city-wide traffic analysis.

"It would look at traffic patterns, that will look at congestion,“ he said. "That would look at corridors that experience these issues the greatest."

The councilman said, to his knowledge, there hasn't been a study this extensive done before.

"It will allow us to be more proactive," he said. "And begin proactively allocating funding and reorienting projects so that they address those issues."

Since the pandemic, the councilman said driver behavior has changed.

"We see way more aggressive drivers," he said. "We are seeing the impacts of construction and congestion."

The city leader said a study like this is needed to also understand the current and future growth of the city.

"If we can do it, I think it would really be a model for other major cities," McKee-Rodriguez said.

McKee-Rodriguez added this isn't going to happen overnight, and a study like this can be costly. There are still several more steps like getting feedback from city staff and going through committees.
