CPS Energy wants to hear from you about proposed rate hike

The city-owned electric company will be holding a virtual town hall meeting on Thursday.

SAN ANTONIO — CPS Energy wants to hear from you on a proposed rate increase which will raise customer bills by less than $5 dollars.

The utility company said this will open a two-way dialogue with customers, as they discuss the rate hike request and why its needed.

The company said the last rate hike was back in March of 2022.

CPS Energy President and CEO Rudy Garza said "this proposed increase is part of improving the utility’s service."

Some of those improvements include investing in infrastructure, improving technology and supporting rapid growth in the city.

If the rate hike is approved, CPS Energy said this could increase the average bill by $4.45 That price can vary according to a bill increase estimator online.

Customers getting gas from the city could also see an increase on top of that. Previously, Mayor Ron Nirenberg said CPS Energy will need to be ready to defend the price.

“We really need to have a good justification for that because our customers are also our owners,” said Mayor Nirenberg.

The tele-town hall is Thursday night at 7 p.m.

Customers interested in taking part can register on the CPS Energy website.

You can also listen on your phone or watch at cps.energy.com/watch live.

City Council is set to hold a final vote on the rate increase next week.

If approved, it would go into effect February 1.
