'Creepy and kooky' Addams Family hits the stage in new NEISD musical

The North East School of the Arts is putting on The Addams Family Musical on Oct. 27-29 and Nov. 3-5.

SAN ANTONIO — The creepiest and kookiest family is set to hit the stage at a performing arts high school in San Antonio just in time for the spooky season of Halloween.

The North East School of the Arts, which includes an intensive musical theater pre-professional program, is putting on The Addams Family Musical on Oct. 27-29 and Nov. 3-5.

The fresh story unfolds when Uncle Fester seeks the help of the family's ancestors after Wednesday decides to bring home her new boyfriend and his "normal" parents. Drama and hilarity ensue when a massive storm traps both families in the mansion for the night.

Senior Briggs Blume plays the family's patriarch, Gomez, a role originated by the iconic Nathan Lane in the first Broadway run of the musical in 2010. He says he loves to the see teamwork of his classmate come together.

"What I like about the show is that it has beautifully-written music. It's a musical written by Andrew Lipa, and I love the music," Blume said. "And it's a wonderful collaboration that we get the opportunity to have been the seven majors here at NESA. So we have the technical theater majors and musical theater majors. Also we have dance majors that are in our cast that are part of the dance ensemble."

One of the technical theater majors is senior Catherine Brown, the stage manager for the Addams Family Musical. She and her crew have been hard at work getting the stage ready in time to present the musical ahead of Halloween.

"Basically, I make sure everything goes smoothly backstage. I run the transitions, the lights, the sounds, I call everything, just make sure it goes all good," Brown said. "We've been working on the set for about two weeks, which is the fastest we've had to put a set on. But, I'm pretty proud of it."
