SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio fire crews battled a heavy fire at an apartment complex on the north side Monday morning.
Firefighters responded to a structure fire call around 10:30 a.m. at the Hudson Apartments on Blanco Road, near North Star Mall.
When fire crews arrived they saw big flames with lots of smoke coming from the complex, which lead to a second alarm.
Officials say the fire was contained to the attic area and the second floor of the complex.
Fire crews were able to knock the bulk of the fire down and will remain on scene until the fire is completely out.
Approximately 22 units were damaged by fire, smoke or water.
The apartment's management team, the Red Cross, and SAMMinistries are working together to get the residents rehoused.
SAMMinistries is the organization housing the 23 people at the Hudson Apartments who lost their home.
President of SAMMinistries Ninisha Baker said every person who lost their home had already been homeless before. The ministry brought them here and provided them housing.
"We have case managers here on site...so it's amazing we have people working with these individuals to keep most of them calm," Baker said.
They are also putting people in hotels, placing some of them in vacant apartments at the complex, and rebuilding some to help the residents be rehoused.
Baker mentioned that when someone loses a home they lose more than the physical. It takes a mental toll on them as well.
When KENS 5 spoke with the residents who had lost their apartments they said they were 'depressed' because once again they have to go out and find a new home.
"We can help them maintain as normal of a status while they're there and we work to get them into their homes once they're renovated," Baker said.
Officials say everyone made it out of the building safely and no injuries were reported.
Other tenants from surrounding buildings were also evacuated as a precaution.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
