SAN ANTONIO - After a massive fire erupted in the Summerview Apartments late Tuesday night, fire crews determined only one person was unaccounted for. That person was 6 -year-old Rudy Alejos.
The rescue operation soon turned to a recovery mission, but even after several days, searchersand cadaverdogswho scoured what was left of Rudy's second-floor apartment, were unable to find a trace of the missing child.
Rudy's mother had been in the Brook Army Medical Center since the night of the blaze. Though still traumatized, she was recently able to communicate to authorities that she may have lost sight of the child in the breezeway outside of their apartment.
Crews brought in moving equipment and began to sift through the debris in that breezeway of the collapsed apartment building. That is where they found the child's remains, says Fire Chief Charles Hood in a Saturday afternoon press conference.
The investigation into the cause of the fire in the 4700 block of Stringfellow St.
A special town hall meeting for the displaced residents of the Summerview Apartments has been set up for Monday night.
