Just how slowly is the Comal River flowing now?

This trend of drier years has had a major impact on our lakes and rivers in the San Antonio region.

SAN ANTONIO — Over the last few years, annual rainfall in the San Antonio region has been extremely low. In fact, 2022 was the second-driest year on record.

This trend of drier years has had a major impact on our lakes, rivers and water sources across South Texas, including the Comal River in New Braunfels. As of early June, the river flow is below its average.

A river flow is shown by units of CFS, or cubic feet per second. The latest observations from the Comal river range from 75 to 90 CFS.

That's far below the average of around 300 CFS, indicating slower flow, meaning float times are a lot longer. If you were to trek out to the Comal River and hop in with a tube this week, your average float would take about three hours.

For comparison, the average float time is around an hour when it's flowing at a normal pace.

This means more time under the sun if you were to soak in the Comal River now! If heading out this summer, take plenty of water, bring sunblock and be safe.

Summer officially begins on June 20 and ends Sept. 22.
