Deputy arrested planned to smuggle drugs into jail, sheriff says

This is the second BCSO deputy arrested in the last 48 hours, and the seventh deputy arrested this year.

SAN ANTONIO — A deputy with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office has been arrested and charged with bribery and drug charges.

Sheriff Javier Salazar told reporters Saturday that 30-year-old Armando Trevino was off-duty when he headed to a meetup to purchase drugs at a gas station near the intersection of Broadway and Loop 410.

A surveillance team was in place and captured a narcotics transaction between the deputy and a citizen.

Trevino was in uniform and carrying a weapon, Salazar said. The sheriff says it was "obvious" the transaction occurred while Trevino was on his way to work, where he planned to smuggle the drugs into the Bexar County Jail.

Trevino is a five-year veteran with BCSO. Salazar says this isn't the first time the deputy has done this.

Trevino faces two charges Possession of Control Substance with Intent to Deliver and an additional Bribery charge. He is currently being held at another jail in another county due to conflict of interest, officials say.

This is the second deputy arrested in the last 48 hours, and the seventh deputy arrested this year.

The man from whom Trevino purchased the narcotics was also taken into custody. 33-year-old Rudy Anthony De La Cruz faces three drug charges as well as a charge for bribery.

The investigation was a joint operation between the sheriff's office and the FBI. Officials say this is an ongoing investigation, and they urge anyone with information to come forward to investigators.
