SAN ANTONIO — Deputy Chief Jamie Rios, a top administrator for the jail, has resigned his position for family reasons, the Bexar County Sheriff's Office said.
In a statement, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar thanked him for his service.
"On October 9, 2023, Deputy Chief Jamie Rios resigned his position to take care of an aging and ailing family member in another part of the state. Having been there myself, it's certainly understandable and commendable. We are actively looking to replace him, as he was a valuable member of our team," Sheriff Salazar said.
Rios was hired in 2019, after more than a dozen inmates were mistakenly released from the jail, prompting calls from local leaders for Salazar to hire someone with strong jail management credentials. Rios had previously served as an administrator at the Maverick County Jail.
Rios' departure comes during a year in which 11 people have died while in custody at the jail.
