'It's just devastating' Family opens up about man shot in the head, killed near a west side laundromat

The medical examiner's office identified the victim as Hyman Lopez Jr. and ruled the cause of death as a homicide.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio police are investigating a deadly shooting Thursday near a laundromat on the west side.

The medical examiner’s office identified the victim as 29-year-old Hyman Lopez Jr. and ruled the cause of his death as a homicide. Police said he was shot in the head.

The shooting happened around 8:30 p.m. on November 2 on the 1000 block of Culebra Road near Zarzamora Street.

Hyman Lopez is the victim’s father. He said he got the call Thursday night from a family member about the shooting while he was asleep. Since, then he said he has been in disbelief.

“I loved him with all my heart,” Lopez said. “He’s a good kid.”

Investigators said that night, they did not find a weapon and had no witnesses. However, they said they did have surveillance video they would review.

“It’s just devastating, for the past three days we’ve just been hoping it’s a nightmare,” Laura Hernandez said.

Hernandez is the victim’s aunt. She said her sister and nephew’s mother had passed away several years ago. She felt she needed to be there for the family in honor of her sister.

“I know that’s what’s getting me by, getting a lot of us by, is that he is with his mom,” Hernandez said.

While the family said they hope and pray for justice, they are focused right now on grieving.

“He loved to joke and laugh,” Hernandez said. “He was loving, very loving.”

SAPD have not identified any suspects. An investigation is underway.
