A man was hit and killed while putting his dogs away in his broken down RV on the highway east of downtown late Sunday night, according to witnesses.
San Antonio Police responded to I-10 East near Dietrich Road just after 10 p.m. for reports of a vehicle hitting someone.
When officers arrived at the location they found 30-year-old Trevor Tardy had been hit and killed by a propane truck.
San Antonio police initially reported Tardy had been chasing his dogs on the highway, but witnesses tell KENS 5, that was not the case. They say he was putting away the dogs, when he was hit by the commercial truck.
One of the dogs named "Bean" was seriously injured in the crash, but after ACS picked up the dogs, Tardy's family was not able to take Bean.
Now a rescue has stepped in to give Bean a second chance.
“Absolute gut wrenching, you know a heart break,” said Melissa McCallister, Founder, Red Fern Animal Rescue
In just a matter of a few days, Bean's life has been turned upside down. His leg was seriously injured in Sunday night's crash.
“We're trying to figure out if the leg is salvageable or not,” said McCallister.
When Red Fern Animal Rescue heard about the accident they wanted to help.
“The idea of just these two dogs losing their owner in such a traumatic way, I thought this is the kind of dog that we as a rescue, love to help,” said McCallister.
McCallister found out Tardy's family went to ACS, but could only care for one of the dogs.
“It's an emotional, story to hear. Thinking about this animal being left behind in a in a busy shelter and already having injuries and not knowing what is, you know, not knowing what is going to happen,” said McCallister.
McCallister says Bean now cries, she believes he's heart broken that he is no longer able to see his owner. As Bean recovers, Red Fern Animal Rescue is going to make sure he finds a new home.
“We just want to do right and help the remaining animal that does not have a home, so that at least there can be some semblance of a small happy ending at the end, at least for part of this tragic story,” said McCallister.
