Downtown Boerne becomes popular spot for annular eclipse

Families packed the lively downtown square to catch a glimpse of the "ring of fire."

BOERNE, Texas — The annular solar eclipse attracted many out of towners to the Texas Hill Country.

Downtown Boerne proved to be a popular spot to set up a chair, put on eclipse glasses and watch the darkening skies.

Families packed the lively downtown square to catch a glimpse of the "ring of fire".

KENS 5 met Audrey Starkey who drove in from Tulsa to meet her son in Boerne. She said she had to see the annular eclipse in-person.

"It was a no brainer. I was like, 'I'm coming!'" said Starkey. "I love all things about the moon and the earth and God's creation. It's beautiful every minute, everywhere you look."

For a sharper view, Starkey set up her camera, but came to find the perfect snapshot can now be taken with a phone.

"[My son's] phone is blowing my camera away," she said, with a smile. "Every five minutes I'm like 'take another one! Take another one!'"

Saturday's spectacle was the first of two eclipses viewable from the Alamo City area.

The next opportunity will be a total eclipse in April.

"We're probably not going to get to see too many more in the area in our lifetime, so we wanted to at least enjoy ourselves and be able to say we were here when it happened," said Ricky Servantes, who drove to Boerne from Victoria, TX. "It's just something once you experience it, you'll never forget it."
