Driver dies after launching car off Navy Pier near USS Midway Museum

San Diego Police say, Aaron Tran, 23, was a hotel receptionist who used a ruse to get in a guest's room and stab her and then drove his car into San Diego Bay.

SAN DIEGO — A man believed to be linked to a stabbing died after he launched his car off the Navy Pier near the USS Midway Museum early Monday morning, San Diego Police said.

It happened just after 12:30 a.m.

Shortly before then, San Diego Police told CBS 8 they responded to a call of a stabbing at The Shoal Hotel on La Jolla Boulevard.

Police said Aaron Tran, 23, stabbed a woman for unknown reasons. The woman was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Tran lived with his parents in San Diego and worked as a receptionist at the hotel, police said Monday afternoon. He checked in two women: one from out of state, and one foreign exchange student.

Tran was off at 10 p.m. Sunday, but around midnight, he used the hotel front desk phone and called up to the women's room. He said he needed to come in because of a water leak, police said.

One woman was asleep when he entered. The other woman, he showed a message on his phone that read, "Don’t scream, I have a knife and I will cut you, put your hands behind your back," added police.

Lt. Paul Phillips says when the woman looked up she saw Tran had a knife.

"She screamed right away. During that struggle, she was stabbed one time in the upper chest, near her collarbone, and I think one time in the arm," said Phillips, San Diego Police.

She woke up the other woman, and they fled in the parking lot and called 911. The woman who was stabbed was brought to the hospital and later released.

The Shoal Hotel declined to comment.

Following the stabbing, witnesses saw a speeding car launch off the Navy Pier.

Harbor Police later recovered a body from the water. San Diego Police identified the body in the car as Tran. Investigators say they found what appeared to be self-inflicting wounds on Tran's neck and they found a pocket knife in the car. The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

Police are looking for more information about this or any similar cases involving Tran. To help, call Lt. Paul Phillips, Northern Division, 858-552-1704 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
