13-year-old injured after two cars begin shooting at each other, police say

Houses and cars were hit by stray bullets.

SAN ANTONIO — Police believe a 13-year-old who showed up at a hospital with a gunshot wound this afternoon was injured in a car-to-car drive-by attack in east San Antonio, at a neighborhood just a few blocks from Sam Houston High School and Davis Middle School.

While San Antonio Police were scouring the area by air and ground, school district officers armed with long guns were seen standing guard around the school perimeters.

One neighbor who lives on Belinda Lee didn't want to be identified, but they provided an account of what it was like when the block was sprayed with 30 to 40 rounds from at least two weapons.

"My brother and I ducked down and I called 911 and they wanted me to give information about the color of the vehicle and I said ‘Lady! I'm on the ground! I'm not going to peek my head up because they were still shooting!’" the neighbor said.

Police said two vehicles drove down Susanwood and Belinda Lee firing wildly. One of the drivers smashed a brick mailbox and police said one group of combatants in a stolen vehicle all jumped out and ran off.

Police said the other vehicle managed to make a clean getaway.

A few minutes later, they said a shooting victim ended up at a nearby hospital. There's no condition update yet or confirmation that the victim was hurt during the incident but neighbors said they want this kind of scary behavior to stop.

In a preliminary report, police said at least two vehicles and two houses were hit by random shots.

Police said they will be looking for surveillance video and hoping someone will give up some clues about what happened.

The San Antonio Independent School District provided the following statement about their response:

“Today, there were two neighborhood shootings in the area of some of our schools, and our SAISD police officers and the San Antonio Police Department responded immediately to each incident – one this morning, and one this afternoon. Our district officers each time assisted the campuses in implementing a lockout procedure in which the perimeter of the campuses are secured, with all students and staff safely inside continuing with normal instructional activity. As a precaution, officers are remaining throughout the afternoon and will assist with school dismissal.”
