Easter campers continue decades-long tradition in Brackenridge park

SAN ANTONIO — Easter campers are settling in at Brackenridge Park near the zoo. A family there shares the three-day outdoor gathering is a decades-long holiday tradition. The Garcia-Mendoza is particular about their Easter Camping spot. The clan has pitched their tents in the same area for decades.

“About 26 years, maybe a little longer than that,” said Aimee Luna. “As far as I can remember I was 8, we would come out here.”

Luna remembers her uncles orchestrating the family adventure when she was a child. Now that the tios are older, the mom of five has a big hand in pulling off the tradition. Grandmother Yolanda Mendoza is also key in carrying on the holiday fun. They say one of the most important parts of the tradition is claiming the perfect spot.

“We’re close to the baseball field and we get to go over there and play kickball and we’ve got shade,” said Meya Yanez. She explained the family showed up at the park at 5 a.m. to wait for their plot.

Over Easter weekend the family has an egg hunt on the agenda and some holiday treats planned.

“We make s’mores and play volleyball,” said Abel Mendoza.

The City of San Antonio lifted their curfew to allow the Easter Camping. Officials remind the park visitors to dispose of all trash and recyclables in the proper areas.
