SAN ANTONIO — It's almost here San Antonians, when those standing in the path of totality can look up at the sky and experience the moon completely blocking 100% of the sun's rays. But, before totality, San Antonians will need to purchase solar glasses to wear in order to safely watch the event unfold.
If eclipse glasses are not worn before totality, then your eyes can be damaged as its never advised to look directly at the sun without protection. Once the sun is completely blocked during 100% totality, San Antonians can remove the glasses to look at the sun.
Since the eclipse is just days away, the safest option for San Antonians to get glasses is to purchase them at a store or attend an in-person event where they will distribute glasses sometimes for free.
Just remember, the glasses must be ISO certified otherwise they are not safe to use.
Here are some options to find eclipse glasses:
Walmart: Stores will sell the glasses in store while supplies last, but you can also buy them online at Walmart. When shopping online, it's better to buy them sooner as delivery may not make it in time for the event.
Walmart has lots of options for solar eclipse glasses such as some that come in large packs to purchase for the whole family, according to their website. Some of these packs include a photo lens to hold on top of a cell phone to take a picture of the sun during the eclipse. Pretty cool!
Now if you end up waiting until the last day Walmart says they also have an Express Delivery Service where you can get glasses delivered strait to your home in 30 minutes. This delivery service is a subscription but they offer a 30 day free trial. Customers can also check their closest Walmart while shopping in person.
H-E-B: Stores will sell glasses while supplies last and if you're ordering for curbside you might have to try various stores as some locations show the glasses out of stock according to their website early Friday afternoon. Solar glasses are flying off the shelves so look around at other locations both online and in person.
The good news is the glasses are only $1.55 for one pair of glasses, according to their website. This is one of the cheapest options for San Antonians if you just want to purchase one pair instead of a pack.
Amazon: Many solar glasses at this point will be delivered late unless you have a prime membership where you have the option for a one-day delivery. However, you will want to act fast as less options become available the longer you wait.
Lowes: Customers can go in person or online to search for a pair of glasses. According to their website on Friday afternoon they still had glasses available for purchase in store at various stores in San Antonio.
If you still can't seem to grab any solar eclipse glasses, San Antonio Parks and Recreation will hold events where they will provide free solar eclipse glasses while supplies.
Phil Hardberger Park and Eisenhower Park are two city parks that lie directly in the path of totality and will hold viewing events.
