Elderly man dead after high-rise apartment fire, SAPD says

The unit where the fire began was the only one with heavy damage. Neighboring units had heavy water and smoke damage and the occupants will need to be relocated.

SAN ANTONIO — An elderly man is dead after a high-rise apartment fire downtown early Tuesday morning, SAPD says.

Firefighters responded to reports of a fire in that high-rise building on the 300 block of North Flores, near West Pecan around 1:42 a.m.

When first responders arrived, they found a fire on the third floor of a residential Opportunity Home San Antonio building.

The SAFD Battalion Chief reported that the crews pulled an elderly man from the unit where the fire began. At least 30 more residents needed some help evacuating, but none were injured in the process.

They were able to extinguish the flames quickly inside that unit after the victim had been taken to the hospital, where sadly he was pronounced dead.

The unit where the fire began was the only one to suffer major damage, although neighboring units had heavy smoke and water damage. Those residents will need to be relocated.

The rest of the residents will be able to return back to their units.

SAPD says that none of the rest of the predominantly senior residents suffered any injuries. The damages to the building were estimated to be around $30,000.

Fire investigators, arson, and SAPD are all on the scene investigating the deadly fire.
