Elderly man killed in golf cart incident on north side, SAPD says

Officers discovered that Robert Andrew Rowton, 72, had been the back passenger on a golf cart that was traveling up a steep hill when it lost control.

SAN ANTONIO — A 72-year-old man was killed when the golf cart he was riding in rolled backwards, police say, causing him to fall out.

San Antonio Police responded to The Club at Sonterra located in the 900 block of East Sonterra Boulevard around 5:30 p.m. on Monday for reports of a golf cart accident.

When officers arrived at the club, they discovered Robert Andrew Rowton, 72, had been the back passenger on a golf cart that was traveling up a steep hill when it lost control. The incident is still being investigated, but police say the person driving the cart and another passenger were both ejected.

Rowton, who was reportedly in the back of the cart during the incident, was found unresponsive at the scene and pronounced dead.

The other passenger was taken to the hospital with multiple serious injuries. The driver of the golf cart told officers that he and the victim were conducting a mechanical test on the golf cart due to a similar incident being reported.

The Medical Examiner will conduct a death investigation to determine the cause of death.

There are no criminal charges pending for this case.
