Elderly woman shot by son who accidentally fired weapon through wall, SAPD says

The man heard a noise in the backyard and went to get his gun, which accidentally discharged going through the wall and hitting his mother in the chest.

SAN ANTONIO — An elderly woman was shot and killed by her son when he accidentally discharged his weapon and the bullet went through a wall, hitting his mom early Sunday.

San Antonio Police responded to the the 900 block of Ripford Street near Highway 90 around 12:26 a.m. for reports of a shooting in progress.

When officers arrived at the home, they found an elderly woman fatally wounded with a gunshot wound to her chest.

Police say that the woman's son, a man in his 60s, heard a noise in the backyard and got his gun. While he was retrieving it, it accidentally discharged, and a round went through the wall hitting his mother in the chest. Lifesaving measures were performed by EMS, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. She has been identified as Sylvia Llanes, 86.

Homicide is continuing the investigation and at this time it's unclear what charges the son may face. No other injuries were reported.
