KERVILLE -- A Nimitz Elementary School janitor in Kerrville was charged with indecency with a child and fired Friday.

The suspected incident happened off-campus at the home of the suspect, 47-year-old Roberto Rios Estrella. Kerrville ISD said student safety is a top priority throughout the community and not just on school grounds.

The suspected incident happened Saturday, Feb. 9. He's out on bond and the news has rattled the community.

I'm shocked, I mean I'm honestly shocked that we have that kind of situation, Greg Young said, an area resident. We think about them happening elsewhere but now they're right here in our own community.

Rios Estrella's family is coming to his defense. His son, Adrian Estrella, 21, said his father is innocent and that his father planned to meet with a defense attorney Monday.

You know, he was drunk so it's easy for somebody to see an opportunity to pull out a scandal, Adrian said. We're going to take it court. It's simply, you know, it's we're not really worried about it. We're just upset with the situation.

Since 2008, all districts in Texas have been required to use a fingerprint-based criminal history check on all employees. As an extra measure, many districts run annual background checks through the Department of Public Safety System.

Rios Estrella's record in Kerr County shows two arrests in the early 90s but were not sexual in nature. Kerrville ISD declined requests for an on-camera interview about Rios Estrella.

Family members said Rios Estrella starting working at the school about a year ago.
