CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A 73-year-old man named Steven Chaney has been identified as the person who died after Monday's fatal single-boat accident near Padre Island.
James Byma, 63, was also on the boat but survived.
The Corpus Christi Fire Department, Nueces County ESD No. 2, and the United States Coast Guard responded to the scene Monday afternoon.
There were two people on the boat, one of whom was confirmed dead.
Emergency crews responding to the incident gathered at the Marker 37 Marina following the accident.
Texas Game Wardens are the lead agency working on the incident.
Capt. Benjamin Baker said much of the investigation is still in the preliminary stage, trying to figure out what led up to the accident and how it occurred.
"So we start our investigation as far as a boating accident report," Baker said. "And we're looking at all the safety aspects, making sure all the rules were followed."
He said that it will take time to go through all of the evidence to officially determine the cause.
"Collecting witness statements, looking at the vessel, just putting all the pieces together and getting a good picture of what caused this accident," Baker said.
