CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas —
The Padre Island National Seashore hosted a Kemp's ridley sea turtle hatchling release this morning, where they released 113 Kemp’s ridley hatchlings from nests that were found in mid-May on the South Texas coast.
Kemp’s ridley sea turtles are the rarest and most endangered species, and it is critical for the public to come out and become a part of the effort in appreciating these creatures.
We were able to catch up with Dr. Donna Shaver a world renowned turtle expert and she shared a few words about the importance of attending turtle releases.
"Ultimately the conservation of this critically invasive species will depend on the actions of the public,” Shaver said. “We want them to know the do's and don'ts, how to not harm the turtles and how to help the turtles. And when you see them you can develop that fondness for them and appreciation. "
Donna Shaver has released hundreds of thousands of turtles in her lifetime and she plans to continue overseeing a variety of sea turtle research and conservation projects.
