SAN ANTONIO — A family had to be rescued after a speeding vehicle came crashing through their home on the northwest side early Wednesday morning.
San Antonio Police responded to the 13400 block of Baldwin Ridge St near W. Hausman Road just after 3 a.m. for reports of a vehicle hitting a home.
Homeowner Muhammad Shahid recalls the chaos happening just 10 minutes after he got a bottle of water and medicine downstairs. He had no idea it was a vehicle that plowed into his living room. Door bell camera video captured the moments leading up to the blue Hyundai Elantra plowing through the home.
“I’m about to sleep but like, I just heard the noise, it’s a very big noise," Shahid said. “My attic just moved. I thought that something happened to the roof.”
Shahid rushed to his two boys' room who were crying and wondering what was going on. He made sure his wife was with the kids as he cautiously checked out the destructive situation downstairs.
“The car was right on the stairs, half of the stairs covered by the car. The guy was trying to get out from there but the door right there with that wood, it wasn’t helping him I believe," Shahid said.
By the time first responders arrived, the driver of the car had vanished.
Firefighters worked to quickly evacuate the family out of the second floor window due to the staircase damage.
Shahid blames the homeowners association of the Park at University Hills neighborhood since he said in the past, they took no action after he complained about reckless drivers outside his house. He has proposed solutions to deter cars from speeding and causing potential harm.
“This curve here is very dangerous. At least if there are speed bumps or stop signs, at least people will react on it," Shahid said.
KENS 5 reached out to HOA representatives who said they could not provide any details at this time in response to the crash.
One of Shahid's neighbors said he plans to reach out to District 8 Manny Pelaez for assistance on creating safer streets.
As or Shahid, he's grateful his loved ones weren't injured. The family is now living with relatives while they figure out next steps.
“At least physically we are all good, my kids are good. That’s the main thing for me.”
Authorities say it's unknown what caused the driver to smash into the house
San Antonio police are still looking for the driver of the crashed vehicle who could face an array of charges if arrested.
