SAN ANTONIO — One year later and $60,000 dollars is still out for the unsolved murder of a University of Incarnate Word student.
This week marks one year since Joseph Banales was gunned down while driving on I-35 in Selma.
Police believe he was the victim of a road rage shooting but have not made an arrest in his case.
We spoke to the Banales family one day after the 22-year-old’s death and they were understandably upset, and remain frustrated with the lack of clues in his case.
Selma Police do believe the shooter was driving a dark sports car, possibly a Nissan with a loud exhaust.
However, they have not be able to identify anyone in connection to his murder.
The shooting happened just before midnight on April 15, 2023.
The cadet was heading home from a military ball when his car was shot at on the highway.
Joseph crashed and was later discovered with a gunshot wound to the head. His mother Frances Szabo can’t believe her son’s killer is still out there.
"Life goes on for everyone. But for us, it stopped last year on April 15," said his mom. "They just haven't taken one person out of this world. It doesn't just affect that one person."
Szabo says the whole family and been affected and all they want is answers.
Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 dollar reward for information leading to an arrest.
In addition, the U.S. Army is offering a $25,000 dollar reward.
And recently his family put up $30,000 dollars for tips in his case.
If you know anything, call Crime Stoppers at (210) 224-STOP.
