Father of three demands justice after family targeted in road rage shooting

Clay Carabajal's 10-year-old son survived being grazed by a bullet while on their way home from visiting friends in the Hill Country.

SAN ANTONIO — Clay Carabajal and his family are grateful to be alive after being shot at while driving home Wednesday night.

“You’re not hitting a car, you’re not hitting a tire, you’re shooting a little kid and that’s disgusting,” Carabajal said.

Police responded to the Valero gas station at the entrance of the San Antonio International Airport just after 10 p.m. where they found the traumatized family of five, including Carabajal’s 10-year-old son Carson, who was grazed by a bullet during the road rage incident.

What began as a relaxing trip home for Carabajal and his family after visiting friends in New Braunfels turned into terror on the highway. Carabajal was driving while his wife and three children were in the passenger seats.

“We were just making that turn from 35 onto 410 near Cowboys Dance Hall when a black sedan or a dark colored sedan pulled up behind us,” Carabajal said. “I didn’t have any room to let him by but he was tailgating. As soon I was able to let him by. He didn’t take the opportunity. He chose to go on the opposite side, the passenger side and shot us four times.”

Carabajal said the bullet grazed Carson's leg. The bullet had impacted his leg, leading to paramedics applying a small bandage.

For a moment, Carabajal feared the worst about one of his other children as they attempted to pursue the shooter.

“And the reason I didn’t get the license plate is our 6-year-old was asleep in the backseat and when he asked all the kids are you okay, he didn’t respond. I thought my son was shot,” Carabajal said.

But Oliver was unharmed fast asleep. While the family’s shaken up, they’re not letting what happened dictate their lives, although they will be more vigilant and hope the community can be on the lookout for the perpetrator.

Carabajal described the shooter as heavy-set balding man in his 40s or 60s with a light beard. He added the person zoomed off toward Airport Boulevard.

“As a paramedic told my son, 'many men have been shot at and cried and you’re just saying I’m okay' and he is and we will be okay. We will be a lot better if this person is behind bars,” Carabajal said.

San Antonio police have not made any arrests.

This remains an ongoing investigation.
