Kitchen fire displaces occupants at apartment complex on north side

The fire was in a kitchen and firefighters were able to extinguish the flames quickly.

SAN ANTONIO — A kitchen fire at an apartment complex on the north side of San Antonio has displaced some residents, fire officials say.

Bulverde firefighters were dispatched to the 24000 block of Wilderness Oak near Canyon Golf Road around 9 a.m. for reports of a fire.

Officials say there were still some people inside the apartments when they arrived. The fire was reported on the second floor of the building, and first responders encountered smoke in the hallways when they entered with their hoses to fight the fire.

Three dogs died as a result of the fire. Two of them belonging to resident Nate Bolivar whose kitchen caught fire, starting the blaze.  Bolivar says he wasn't home when the fire ignited.

“I am heartbroken that my dogs… they’re basically my children," he said. "They are my emotional support dogs due to me being in the military and having to deal with everything.”

Bolivar received a Ring notification of maintenance trying to gain entry into his unit.

“Once I got the second notification is when I clicked on it, heard the fire alarms and them covering their mouths, I dropped everything I was doing, sprinted out of there and sped over here.”

Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames quickly. It was contained to just one unit, officials say. Nobody was home in the apartment where the fire began.

Crews searched all of the apartments to make sure everyone evacuated.

A total of 34 apartments were impacted by the fire due to smoke and water damage. The amount of people impacted is unknown. The Red Cross will be helping the occupants displaced by the fire.

Bexar County Fire Office is investigating the fire. The exact cause is still pending.
