Fire on southeast side destroys home, SAFD says

Hoarding conditions made the fire difficult to fight, officials say.

SAN ANTONIO — An early morning fire has destroyed a home on the southeast side, firefighters say.

The San Antonio Fire Department was called out to the 2500 block of Schley Avenue near Rigsby Avenue around 4:30 a.m. Monday for reports of a structure fire.

SAFD said when they got to the scene, they saw flames showing at the home. They tried to extinguish the fire, but unfortunately it had already spread to the house next door. Officials say the flames were so big that they caught the power lines on fire as well.

Firefighters say the fire initially began in the front room of the home, then quickly spread. Hoarding conditions in the home made it difficult for the firefighters to gain access to the home, officials say. The Batallion Chief said nobody was home, but somebody does live there.

It appears the fire damaged the second home's siding and a vehicle parked in their driveway. A family was inside that home, but made it out safely.

Investigators remain on the scene but tell us that it may be difficult to determine the cause of the fire due to the conditions of the home. No word on the dollar amount of damages, but it does appear the home is a total loss.

This is a developing story.
