Officials investigating fire at vacant home on southeast side of town

When first responders arrived at the home, they found a fire in a structure in back of the house, possibly a garage.

SAN ANTONIO — An overnight fire on the southeast side scared neighbors who watched flames leaping into the sky just a few feet from their homes on Glamis Avenue near Goliad Road.

Luckily, there were no injuries reported just before 1 a.m., when neighbors heard a big commotion and came out to find a small converted garage ablaze.

Firefighters believe the structure may have been vacant, but several neighbors said they believe someone may have been living in the 500-square-foot structure.

Emily, who lives across the street, said her son warned the family of danger when he smelled smoke.

Emily said she looked outside and said, “Man it's crazy! I hope nobody was inside the house because actually people live there.”

Fire officials said beyond the hazard of flames, a power line dropped during the fight. In a closely packed neighborhood, some worried they could be next.

“It was a little scary to know that fire could have went to another house even over here," Emily said.

Because house fires increase during cold winter months, fire officials said now more than ever:

  • Don't leave space heaters unattended.
  • Don't overload electrical cords for holiday lighting.
  • Remember one-third of home decoration fires are started by candles.

The investigation into what started this fire continues.
