SAN ANTONIO — TxDOT is celebrating a major milestone on the Loop 1604 North Expansion project Tuesday.
The agency along with local officials are holding a ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate the opening of the first flyover ramp of the Loop 1604 and I-10 interchange.
The ramp from eastbound Loop 1604 to westbound I-10 will be open to commuters, TxDOT says.
The weekend of Nov. 22-24 was the last weekend closure of construction on the project. Officials say no further closures will happen until after the winter holiday period.
The project has been going on for several months causing traffic headaches for drivers in the Rim, La Cantera and Six Flags areas. The $1.4 billion project is expected to transform a 23-mile stretch of Loop 1604 in north Bexar County. The project is split up into six segments from SH 16 (Bandera Road) to I-35. The TxDOT plan is to have most segments done by 2027 with the last segment from I-35 to Judson wrapping up in 2028.
The Texas Transportation Commission has designated the Loop 1604 North Expansion project as part of the statewide Texas Clear Lanes initiative, organized to address the most congested areas in the state.
The Loop 1604 North corridor has been identified as one of the most congested corridors in Texas by the Texas A&M Transportation Institute. By 2040, traffic demand is expected to double with a projected 290,000 drivers traveling the corridor each day and travel times as long as 113 minutes.
