'You can change things' | San Antonio high school students register to vote, learn importance of their voices

According to Bexar County, there are currently 1,274,000 registered voters compared to 1,188,913 in the 2020 Presidential election.

SAN ANTONIO — A special lesson happened on Tuesday inside Sonia Sotomayor High School that will have a lasting impact on students.

Future first-time voters got to register to vote on National Voter Registration Day.

Volunteer Deputy Registrar Belinda Mood is with EVRI or Educators Voter Registration Initiative which is part of the group Youth Do Vote.

EVRI was founded in 2014 and is mostly made up of retired teachers. Youth Do Vote said it is a nonpartisan, collaborative network in Bexar County that likes to empower educators and students.

"I wish I had an opportunity like this when I was a junior or senior in high school," Mood said.

On Tuesday, she taught the kids about the requirements and registered students who were eligible right from the comfort of their class.

"There are a lot of myths behind voting that the students have questions," she said. "I like to debunk some of the myths and give them the facts."

Darrell Bacon is one of the students who got to register to vote. He said that it is cool and is something he has been looking forward to.

"Turning 18 and being able to vote is something I have been looking forward to," he said. "Voting you can put your say in the government, and it is how you can change things."

He credits the organizations, his school, and government teacher Jackson Wolek.

"I think it is really cool for students that I teach to be able to get a chance to register to vote right here in their classroom," Wolek said.

Bacon said he is excited to vote in first election and encourages others to head to the polls.

"My advice is go out there and vote," he said. "Every vote counts."

The deadline to register to vote is October 7.
