SAN ANTONIO — At a special meeting Wednesday, Floresville Independent School District announced its board of trustees voted unanimously to approve random drug tests for students.
The drug tests will be required for 7th - 12th graders and the district says the program aims to provide for the health and safety of students and “Promote a drug-free environment that attempts to be proactive instead of reactive and focus on prevention counseling and support services for those who test positive.”
Students subject to the random drug testing include those in UIL competitions, athletics, extra-curricular and organizations as well as those who have a permit to park on campus.
Punishment for failing a drug test will vary.
First through third offenses will result in suspensions and a fourth offense will result in the removal from all extracurricular activities.
The full list of guidelines regarding the drug testing can be viewed here.
Floresville ISD Superintendent Dr. Jason Gilstrap released a statement in support of the unanimous decision by the board:
“This policy update and the program that it supports are designed with our students' health in mind, helping to eliminate a potential threat to the students' well-being, reinforcing our efforts to discourage students from using dangerous illegal substances, identifying substance abuse early on, and assisting with timely intervention as well as support.”
