FORT WORTH, Texas — A woman accused of drunkenly crashing into a Fort Worth police officer and killing him told officers that she had around 10 shots of alcohol before the crash happened Monday morning, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
She also did not stop driving for another quarter-mile after hitting the officer, the affidavit said.
De Aujalae Evans, 25, faces a charge of intoxication manslaughter in the death of police Sgt. Billy Randolph.
Randolph, a 29-year police veteran, was working an early-morning crash on Interstate 35W in south Fort Worth when a car went through the crash scene and hit him, police said. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.
Evans was arrested at the scene after running to a nearby Motel 6 parking lot, according to the arrest warrant affidavit obtained by WFAA.
The affidavit said Randolph was standing on a highway off-ramp when Evans, driving a 2020 Nissan Versa, went the wrong way on the ramp and hit him.
The crash threw Randolph into the air, and he landed on the roadway, according to the affidavit.
The affidavit said Evans "made no attempt to stop" after hitting Randolph and continued driving for about a quarter of a mile. When she stopped, the affidavit said, she ran away, jumped over a wall and went toward a Motel 6 located off the highway.
Officers caught up to her and put her in custody.
One of the officers "noted the odor of an alcoholic beverage" on Evans' breath and saw that her eyes were watery and her speech was slurred, the affidavit said.
Evans told the officer that she drank an unknown amount of alcohol from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. that morning, according to the affidavit. While Evans' blood draw results were pending when the affidavit was written, the document said she later told detectives that she drank about 10 shots that night before the crash.
"She also stated that she was drunk when the accident occurred," the affidavit said.
Evans remained in custody at the Tarrant County Jail on Friday with her bond amount set at $750,000, according to online records.
Evans is on probation for a previous incident in which she was convicted of shooting a woman in 2023, according to records. She pleaded guilty in the case and was sentenced to six years of probation.
Randolph's celebration of life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Christ Chapel Bible Church, located 3701 Birchman Ave. It is open to the public, but there will be limited seating inside the sanctuary. You can also watch the service live here.
