SAN ANTONIO — This year the Girl Scouts celebrate their 100th anniversary. One way you can support them is to make time to see a very moving mural that took a month for them to complete.
The mural, located right in Main Plaza, not only celebrates 100 years of Girl Scouts, but also features prominent San Antonio citizens like Mayor Lila Cockrell who was the first female mayor of San Antonio, and Cristina Noriega a Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas volunteer.
The main artist producing the mural told us, "This mural not only shows girls the women that have had an impact, a really big impact, on their community. It also shows things like the cookies and historic photos, that represent key moments in the history."
They started the mural back in March, which includes pictures of history, and the words: "brave and be kind." For some of the older scouts in history, like Lila Cockrell, it proved to be a bit challenging.
Cristina Noreiga added, "It's like looking at her baby photo, an adult photo, and trying to create a young Lila Cockrell. And so it's it's it's a mix of techniques."
Also included in the mural are Sally Cheever, Angie Salinas, the current CEO for the Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas Leticia Van de Putte, a modern day Girl Scout Luz Fonseca, and Amerie Jo Garza who had only been a Girl Scout for six months before she lost her life in the tragic shooting at Robb Elementary.
"She posthumously, got the Bronze Cross award for bravery," said Noriega. That award for her reported attempt to call 911 during the shooting. Noriega also said, "I'm finishing painting patches on her sash that represent things she loved and things she would have aspired to get."
If you want to see the mural, it will be at the intersection of West Market and Main Plaza for at least the next couple of years.
