'Everybody was crying and hugging' | Justice for Phoenix served in a Gonzales County Courtroom

"They stood outside with her, while I went in. Reading the verdict was very emotional, I couldn't contain myself," said Ashley Book, 4 Little Paws Rescue.

SAN ANTONIO — Ashley Book, medical director with 4 Little Paws Rescue, says the last 8 months has been a long journey.

In February, Book got a call about a dog found burned in Nixon, so she jumped in her SUV and picked up, Phoenix.

“I initially didn't think she was going to make it, and this is going to be extremely costly," said Book.

In February, Nixon Police say 28 year-old, Michael Villanueva doused Phoenix with gasoline, and set her on fire.

Phoenix was able to make her way to a woman's porch, where she got help.

Phoenix lost 90% of her fur, and had to undergo several procedures, including skin grafts and an eye surgery.

“She was in pain, but through the whole thing, she was such a good sport. She didn't put a fuss when we were changing her bandages or anything like that. She just she took it all in stride," said Book.

The community responded by rallying behind Phoenix, by raising more than $112,000 for her treatment.

"We're so appreciative of everybody's donations and support. I don't think we could have got through it, without everybody," said Book.

Since then, Phoenix has made a great recovery including getting some of her fur back, and Book says she doesn't anticipate any issues going forward.

On Tuesday supporters rallied again inside and outside the Gonzales County Courthouse as Villanueva pleaded guilty to an animal cruelty charge and other unrelated charges.  Phoenix wasn't allowed inside the courtroom, so she waited outside.

Ultimately Villanueva was given the maximum 20 year sentence, Book says it was an emotional moment.

“They stood outside with her while I went in, and yeah, reading that verdict was very emotional. I couldn't contain myself," said Book.

Book decided to keep Phoenix, and says money raised has been able to cover her treatments. Book says additional money raised has been used to save other animals.
