Gov. Abbott speaks about immigration at RNC Wednesday

He used his time to talk about the border, criticizing the president over his immigration policies.

SAN ANTONIO — Texas Governor Greg Abbott took the stage last night at the Republican National Convention and used his time to talk about the border, criticizing the president over his immigration policies.

It was a big moment for Governor Abbott. He got a strong reaction from the crowd Wednesday night, highlighting his multi-billion dollar crackdown at the southern border. And that was his biggest talking point of the night.

He attacked the Biden administration over immigration, saying the president deserted his duty since the beginning of his term.

"On his first day in office he gutted President Trump's policies and the result has been catastrophic," said Gov. Abbott. "Under Joe Biden, illegal immigration has skyrocketed under his watch around and 11 million immigrants have crossed our border illegally."

Abbott used the greater second part of his speech to lay out what he has done in response. He touted the razor wire at the border, the deployment of thousands of National Guard soliders and the migrants he had bused out of Texas to Democratic-led cities.

He also named 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray out of Houston. Her death has been held up by Republicans as an example of "migrant crime."

His speech comes amid ongoing fallout from Hurricane Beryl. Since the storm’s landfall, Abbott has faced criticism from Texas Democrats for being in Asia for work.

However, he missed the first two days of the convention, to deal with fallout from the storm.
