Grand opening announced for pirate-themed play park in honor of three-year-old who drowned at SA swim school in 2018

Mitchell’s Landing now has a grand opening date set for November 30.

SAN ANTONIO — The wait is nearly over for the massive pirate-themed play park coming to San Antonio’s north-side.

Mitchell’s Landing, a 204-acre play park named after Mitchell Chang – who drowned at a swimming school in 2018 – now has a grand opening date set for November 30, according to a Facebook post by Mitchell’s mother, April Chang.

The family has fought to keep Mitchell’s memory alive and push for change including efforts to push Texas lawmakers to regulate aquatic instruction centers similar to the Love to Swim School where Mitchell drowned.

Following the toddler’s tragic death, his parents formed the Mitchell Chang Foundation in honor of the three-year-old with a goal to bring the first free, public and inclusive playground to the Alamo City.

The announcement for the park’s grand opening came on what would’ve been Mitchell’s 10th birthday on Monday, September 16.

Mitchell's Landing will be a destination playground in the 2000 block of Hardy Oak Parkway within Classen-Steubing Ranch Park. The park will have 164 parking spots, walking trails, a pavilion, restrooms, picnic areas, baseball fields and open-play fields.
