"My grandson would have died," Clovis McKenzie said. "He would have been dead today."

SAN ANTONIO — A normal Sunday was interrupted by flames inside Clovis McKenzie's home.

"When I was sitting the living room, I heard three pops," he said. "Pop, pop, pop."The place was on fire. "The place was engulfed in fire."

The emotional grandfather recounted the terrifying moments of trying to get his non-verbal grandson to safety after their home caught fire. His son Chad was asleep, Clovis ran to wake him up. The next thing was getting his grandson Cameron out of the burning home.

"I couldn't find him because the smoke was intense," he said.

The family said, 18, Cameron is non-verbal and has an intellectual disability.

"My son went in there and had to literally feel for him," Clovis said. "And when he found him, he pulled him by his arm outside."

Clovis said he was thankful for the firefighters arriving within minutes to the home off Dolomite Drive near 281 and TPC Parkway.

"My grandson would have died," he said. "He would have been dead today. He would have been out cold. Luckily, God sent my son."

Neighbors like Nonnie Briggs and others also jumped in to help before fire crews started showing up.

Cindi McKenzie is Clovis's daughter, and also expressed gratitude to the neighbors on the street.

"It is devastating," she said. "They lost everything. I am just glad everyone is okay that is the greatest blessing."
