Habitat for Humanity gifts family new home just in time for Thanksgiving

The family got the keys to their new home during a special ceremony on Monday.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — One Corpus Christi family will be spending their first Thanksgiving in their new home thanks to Habitat for Humanity.

The home, owned by the original family since the early 60s, was given to the nonprofit to be rehabilitated and passed down so the new family could fill it with memories.

That new family got the keys to their new home during a special ceremony on Monday.

3NEWS caught up with the original owner, the Rev. Don Downey who said passing the property down was something he felt called to do.

"I just hope that they have an even greater time and an abundance of joy over and above what I did for 50 years," he said. "May God truly bless them and prosper them as a family and as homeowners."

Organizers with Habitat for Humanity said they have plans to build four more houses within the next year.
