Halloween costume safety tips for parents

Halloween can be a fun, spooky time. But if proper care is not taken, your costume can actually be the scariest part.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — With just nine days until Halloween, many people are thinking about their costumes. But be aware: some costumes can pose serious safety risks, especially for children.

Experts warn that bulky costumes can interfere with seat belts and car seats, putting children at risk if they're being driven from house to house. To avoid this, it's recommended to wait until you arrive at your destination before putting on your costume.

Halloween is also one of the deadliest holidays for pedestrians, with a 43% increase in fatalities. To stay safe, trick-or-treaters should always stick to sidewalks and avoid crossing the street without looking both ways.

Decorative contact lenses can add a unique touch to your costume, but they can also pose health risks. The FDA advises against using decorative lenses and recommends sticking to prescription contacts.

By being aware of these potential dangers and taking precautions, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable Halloween for everyone.
