Gunfire reported at Leon Valley H-E-B, authorities say

Bexar County authorities said they have a suspect in custody. They haven't been identified yet.

SAN ANTONIO — A man is in custody after shots were fired at a west-side H-E-B on Tuesday afternoon, local authorities say.

Bexar County sheriff's deputies and Leon Valley police responded to the store in the 5600 block of Bandera Road, near Loop 410, at around 1 p.m. Officials with the Leon Valley Police Department said no one was found hurt at the store, and an H-E-B spokesperson also said there was an "incident" before adding no one was injured.

That contradicts an earlier statement from the Bexar County Sheriff's Office, which told KENS 5 a woman was "struck by gunfire." KENS 5 has reached out to the agency for clarification.

Leon Valley Police Chief David Gonzales said the suspect "had walked away" and was a "good distance away" before he was taken into custody. But an audible gunshot can be heard in video shared by a woman who was inside the H-E-B at that time. It's unclear exactly who fires the shot, but a police officer could be seen with his gun drawn outside and near the entrance.

The suspect hasn't been identified. Gonzales said it "does not appear that he was targeting anyone."

One shopper who was inside while the gunshot rang out said she saw the suspect walk outside as she was entering the store.

“I got terrified because it happened right next to me and um as I soon as he walked out of the double doors, I had just walked into the store and they started screaming, put the gun down," she said.

She said moments later, she heard a single gunshot.

"It sounded like it was in the store," she said.

Gonzales reiterated that no shots were fired inside the store. Letty Gonzalez pulled up afterwards, expecting to go inside the pharmacy but instead was met with a crime scene.

“I’ve been living in this area for 30 years and nothing like this has ever happened that I heard of and it’s scary that we can’t even shop here and just be safe," Gonzalez said.
